Souvenirs

Leuk spul.
The Dutch are taking souvenirs from the Eiffel tower when they go to France, Frenchman on holiday are taking souvenirs like wooden shoes (we call them ‘klompen’).
My hunt for souvenirs set limits generally to local maps. At my search during my last holiday I discovered these "Geo Reliëf" maps.
By looking at these maps you get a good impression how the mountains are situated, in any case a lot easier than on a normal (flat) map, where you must search for the
altitude meters. I have now in my collection the Drome, Ardeche and France.
Nice stuff.

Auvergne

Col: Pas de Peyrol
Département : Auvergne
west: 29 km.
Stijgings percentage
Gemiddeld : 3%
Maximaal : 17%

A ride from our residence Beaulieu (nearby Bort-les-Orgues) in the Auvergne. After awakening and a fast look between the curtains, appears the world very small, fog! After breakfast still fog, nevertheless with lots of good courage putting the bicycle in the car and underway to Pas the Peyrol.

The intention is starting in Mauriac. The ride with the car is not pleasant, much fog and the road very winding. When I drove into Mauriac, it suddenly cleared up and the sun shines, exactly on time!

From Mauriac it is approximately 16km on the busy motorway D922, not so interesting, till the turn with the D680 to the left, here the Pas de Peyrol starts, till up to Salers (called to the Salers cows? Or have the cows been named to Salers?) the road is lightly rising, as we call it false flat (vals plat).
Just after Salers the temperature has considerably risen and I can take off my wind jacket. In the same time a moment for a little pee, and peeling a banana. When I where doing my sanitary need, an France cyclist passes me by. By the looks a fast guy.

After I have put away my wind jacket and eat my banana, I paced on. At my surprise I’ve got, after a couple turnings, the French man in sight. This gives me courage and because it is not to heavy climbing on this part of the road, I accelerate some. I approach slowly to the rider in front of me, on a climb it cost nevertheless much time and energy.
After approximately 10minuten I stick in the wheel of my young colleague. A little time to recuperate. Just a moment in the wheel, less wind and especially enjoying the view.
A splendid panorama at the right-hand side, the valley and the mountains on the other side of the valley. After a number of turnings I was somewhat recuperated, and because the wind blows here very strongly, I want to show my companion, that we riders from Zeeland, (a province of the Nederland’s) know what it is to ride against the wind. So I take over the head position. When the road branched of in D680/D12 I heart a short “bon route” behind me and the French man turned left.

Solo again, riding threw a peace off dark forest with a splendid water fall on the right side, I feel superb today with superb strong legs, it goes very smoothly today. But then, a large information singe for the cyclist, Pas the Peyrol 4 kilometres, average increase 10%, and here starts the real climb, it is every kilometre a struggle.
On the pavement has been plastered with large characters "COURAGE", and that’s what you need here. The last 2 kilometres, "DUR DUR" on the pavement, indeed it runs here cruelly style! Very heavy.
Then the last kilometre with pieces of 17%, swinging across the road on the bicycle, getting no breath, your body wants to do one thing, stop!!!

But when you are on top, that feeling, wonderful!!! A moment for enjoying the view, a drink with the many tourists and the day-trippers, putting on my wind jacket and going for a lovely downhill for 29 kilometres, and finely to Mauriac.

A delicious piece of cycling today.
